Returning Artifacts to Peru

*i found this post in my drafts…no idea why I saved it, but didn’t post it, so here it is, one week late*:

This morning on NPR I listened to a piece about Yale reaching an agreement with Peru to return artifacts found at Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham in 1911. They are building a museum in Cusco where the artifacts will be on display, to be opened in 2011, a hundred years after Machu Picchu was discovered by Mr. Bingham. Apparently some correspondence was found between Mr. Bingham, Yale and the Peruvian authorities, stating that it’s agreed that the artifacts would remain property of Peru.
It will be nice to see what was found at the site, because even though Machu Picchu is a magnificent site on its own, it would give some more insight on how the people lived at the site. I can’t wait for 2011 to return to Peru, because I wanna go with Fishering before that, but I guess we would just have to return after the museum opens up!
